Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children are disproportionately impacted by domestic, family and sexual violence but our voices are often marginalised. The vision for the Network was created in response to a need for Aboriginal female leadership in this space and a platform for the voices of Aboriginal women and children.
AWAN was established to support Closing the Gap Target 13 initiatives to reduce family violence and abuse against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children. We are auspiced by Wirringa Baiya Aboriginal Women’s Legal Centre, the NSW state-wide community legal centre for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, children and youth which has been operating since 1997. Our program is led by and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.
AWAN's mission is to improve the safety and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children.
AWAN is an advocacy body for the rights and interests of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children. Our guiding principle is When we rise, we all rise together.

Acknowledgement and Respects
The NSW Aboriginal Women's Advisory Network is situated on the land of the Gadigal people, of the Eora Nation. We acknowledge that they are the traditional custodians of the land on which we work. We pay our respects to our Elders past, present and emerging and extend our respects to Stolen Generations Survivors, their families and communities. We also acknowledge the many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children who have experienced violence and abuse.
